Last week I started pulling out the Fall decorations and after putting up my usual decorations my mantle looked a little naked. I didn't want to go to the store and buy anything so I turned to Pinterest for inspiration. I saw many cute buntings and decided to make a no sew version using my hot glue gun.

Using burlap, twine and some Halloween fabric from my stash I made 2 buntings. I made an approx. 9 inch (when measured at the base) triangle template from a cardboard box and used that to make the big triangles. I made the small bunting using the scraps left over from cutting the big triangles. It turned out pretty cute if I do say so myself. This is the first year I've put up a bunting on the mantle and I really like the way it looks.

I am still around and still sewing. It's been hard trying to balance blogging with real life responsibilities. This summer was busy but in a good way.

We spent a week at the beach, played a ton of yard football, celebrated hubby's 40th birthday with a short trip to Miami and went to the pool a million times. For real. We crossed some things off of our family to do list: my 6 year old learned how to swim without floaties, he also learned how to ride his bike without training wheels (that day was huge!!), my 3 year old is now a confident beginner swimmer and really enjoyed swimming with just floaties.
On the sewing front, I finished my citrus quilt and it's getting much love around here. I was commissioned by the boys to make some spiderman pillowcases and bean bags. I made a baby carrier, embellished some cloth diapers for my sister's baby shower and I'm in the process of finishing up a baby quilt for my brand new nephew and an I-spy quilt for my youngest's 4th birthday (which is right around the corner). Pics (of quilts) to come soon. I can't believe it's almost Christmas...wow.
I'm almost done with my citrus quilt. Yay!! The only thing left to do is attach the binding. I went with one of my favorite prints of all time, full moon polka dot in green (?, not sure if that's the exact color but you get the picture) and tangerine.

I was able to finish up the quilting while the hubby and kids cooked me a wonderful Mother's Day lasagna dinner. It was a great day! Stay tuned for pics of the finished product.

Finally, after much procrastinating my Citrus Quilt top is done! I really, really love how it turned out. The bright colors really pop against the white. My favorite part is the scrappy border. It measures about 64 inches wide and 75 inches long. The hubs is happy about it too because he can finally stretch out under a quilt without his toes peeking out at the bottom.

This is by far the biggest quilt I've made and I can't wait to quilt it. I've started piecing the back using some of the scraps leftover from making the top and some other fabrics from my stash.

I'm linking this up over at Crazy Mom Quilts Finish it Up Friday. Have you finished anything this week? It doesn't have to be a sewing project. Have you been bit by the Spring cleaning bug? If you have tell it to come bite me b/c I need some encouragement! Have a great weekend!Patricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-40149283622539210982012-04-11T22:28:00.003-04:002012-04-11T22:28:48.909-04:00Happy Belated EasterHappy Belated Easter! I hope everyone's Sunday was great. After church, we had friends over for dinner, had an Easter egg hunt for the kiddos and played volleyball in my back yard. We had so much fun! I know it's Wednesday and all but since Easter is one of my FAVORITE holidays and I didn't think it would be right to leave it unacknowledged to my blog peeps.

This was the first year the boys have had a part in the Easter program at church and I'm really glad I decided to make them do it. (thanks Chantel for the extra <strike>push</strike> encouragement!) I think they enjoyed it too.

I did get a little sewing done on the citrus quilt. So far the top is complete and I'm piecing the back. I love this quilt already and can't wait to finish it. I promise to post some pics. This has been a crazy week for us with J starting back school after Spring Break and work has been insane so I'm looking forward to a date with my sewing machine this weekend and will hopefully start quilting it.

The lovely stack of fabric below will become a baby shower gift soon. I'm thinking of doing a stacked coin quilt with some neutral sashing in between the stacks, probably Kona Ash. Stay tuned....
They lit a fire under me and encouraged me to work on getting it finished. I've attached the scrappy border and the only thing left to do on the quilt top is attach the white border. I haven't taken any pics of it with the scrappy border but it really brings the design and colors together. At the pace I'm going though I should be done with this quilt by the summer. :-)

As you can see from the pics above, I'm also working on a half square triangle quilt using my scraps. Some of the fabrics are novelty and some are just from past sewing projects. This quilt is going to be a long term WIP. I enjoy snatching a few minutes in between "mommy work" and piecing the units a little at a time. Some of the fabric is not my favorite but I can't in good conscience waste fabric so I'm hoping when the quilt comes together it won't matter and they will all just blend in.

Still in progress
1. I-spy for B--I got some great novelty squares from the ELQ charm swap and all that's left to do is piece this top

2. Baby gift -haven't started yet, just have fabric picked out

I have always loved rainbow quilts. It's something about the progression of colors that appeals to me. I got motivated to try a spectrum quilt when Jennifer of Ellison Lane Quilts started the Modern Mini Challenge.

The hardest part of this quilt was deciding on how to quilt it. I didn't want to stipple the colored bars because I thought it would take away from the simplicity of the colors, but the empty white space needed some umph! I bought some variegated thread thinking that I could do straight lines across the quilt horizontally but when I started doing it I didn't like how every little imperfection showed on the white background. So....I decided to make clouds using a pebble quilting technique and FMQ some raindrops. This is my first try at pebble quilting and they are very <strike>uneven</strike> organic. I really like how it turned out though. This is my first time doing applique too. I used a fabric glue stick and just stitched around the edge. I had a lot of fun making this quilt.
I couldn't help but think of that song when I typed this post title. If you don't know it google it, it's a very catchy song.

Anyway, this post is really not about a song. It's about scraps. I have officially caught scrap fever! I follow a lot of blogs and many of them are focusing on using scraps. I am totally inspired by what I'm seeing and am officially jumping on the scrap bandwagon. I think making my first log cabin block started the ball rolling. This is another scrappy log cabin block and I think I like it better than the first. It uses more pieces and I like the colors more. I added the black and white stripe piece to give the block some contrast. I liked how it looked so much that I added a strip to the first block. These blocks are going to be perfect for a scrappy log cabin quilt.

I also started cutting out some half square triangles to use in my HST quilt that's on my bucket list. This quilt is going to be scrappy too. Since my scrap pile is pretty small and doesn't contain a lot of color variance I'll be pulling from my stash for some of the colors I haven't used yet in a quilt (purples, brown, black, blue). I tend to gravitate toward pink, orange, yellow, white and red because they're my faves. I'm using my Accuquilt Go Baby to cut out the triangles and the squares are coming together nicely. I'm enjoying working on this project a little at a time.Patricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-37981858636863631372012-01-31T08:40:00.018-05:002012-01-31T08:40:00.341-05:00Mini quilt challengeJennifer at Ellison Lane Quilts is hosting a mini quilt challenge and I've got to join in on the fun. The prizes are fantastic and I've really never done a "mini quilt". I've done a couple of mug rugs but I want to do something a little different. I'm excited!!

I'm not sure what fabrics I'm going to use, but I'm leaning toward blues and greens as the main color. Stay tuned....Patricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-12679708350152738682012-01-30T09:44:00.000-05:002012-01-30T09:44:13.590-05:00StashbuildingLast week was a GREAT mail day! The mailman brought me some yummy fabric goodness. I haven't really bought fabric since before the holidays, so I was way overdue. :-)
I have been waiting for Pezzy Print to be released since I first saw some "old" pez fabric on Flickr last year. Being a new quilter I of course missed out on the first release of the pez fabric ( I don't know when it was but I know I missed it) so I wasn't going to miss it this time around. I got the fat quarter bundle but I'm going to have to get some yardage of some of the colors. I don't have a great variety of blues in my stash (mostly aqua) and this line has a great baby blue, navy blue and a pretty teal color.

I found both of these lines here: The Fat Quarter Shop and FabricwormPatricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-63280740164962817832012-01-05T20:48:00.001-05:002012-01-05T20:52:39.553-05:00Is it really 2012?Happy New Year! I can't believe I haven't posted anything here in over a month. Wow! I haven't sewed a stitch since that improv log cabin and I'm itching to get back in the swing of things. I hope to quilt more in 2012. I've already got a couple of ideas for quilts swimming around in my head and it's just the first week in January.

One of my goals for 2012 is to use more fabrics out of my stash and limit the number of precut fabrics that I purchase. I've had a small love affair with precuts and it's time to end it! I bought myself an Accuquilt Go Baby fabric cutter and I love it. I picked up the 5 inch square die, 2.5 inch strip die and a HST die. Now I can make my own charm squares and not buy them. Yay for me!

Some of my goals for 2012:
1. finish citrus quilt
2. I Spy quilt for B
3. quilt for my sister
4. patchwork quilt for my brother
5. HST mini quilt for my sewing corner
6. baby quilt
7. a totally improvised quilt

This picture has nothing to do with quilting. I know. I just thought I'd share a pic of my two sweet boys. And besides you can't have a post without a picture. That would be boring.Patricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-48789989793669078082011-11-25T09:22:00.000-05:002011-11-25T09:22:27.994-05:00Log cabin love

While my oldest was at school and my baby (who is almost 3 by the way ;-) was napping I had the urge to make something quick. I needed to feel productive and my sewing machine looked so lonely. So I pulled out my scrap box and figured I could make a log cabin block with what little time and fabric scraps I had. My scrap stash is very, very small. Most of the scraps are from my citrus quilt and J's I-Spy quilt (mostly novelty prints from wally world and Hobby Lobby). So I just pulled out some longish pieces and evened out the edges. When I was piecing I didn't pay any attention to color placement or pattern. It was very improvisational, relaxing and fun! I see more improv piecing in my future for sure.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. We hosted about 15 people and had a great time. Surprisingly I didn't overeat. I'm hoping to get a little sewing done this weekend. I definitely won't be doing any shopping at. all. Have a good Friday!Patricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-31071835160238545752011-11-13T21:43:00.001-05:002011-11-13T22:01:26.827-05:00My First Mini QuiltSince I am a newbie quilter there are going to be a lot of firsts around here... :-) I'm going to apologize in advance for the terrible pictures in this post. They were taken at around midnight in my dark cavelike dining room STRICTLY to document my sewing projects. Never, never, never in a million years did I think I would have a blog and that these pics would show up here. I mean really, never. But anyway...
I made this mug rug truly as an experiment. I follow a lot of sewing blogs and last year a couple of them had mug rug swaps. I loved looking at what everyone was making and I just had to get in on the fun. I didn't make this to swap though, just to make something quick and cute. The front fabric is from a jelly roll from Hobby Lobby and one small strip of Kona Sand. The back fabric is from It's a Hoot by MoMo. I finished the binding by machine and was pleased with the result. Not perfect by any means, but I'm okay with that.

It measures about 6 inches high and 13 inches wide. Its big enough to hold my favorite big Starbucks coffee cup and an english muffin (my usual breakfast). I really need to make another one of these because it took no time at all to make and it was fun! My stash of fabrics has grown a lot since last year and it would be fun to use a bit of it on another mini quilt. Some of the things on my To Do List for 2012 (yes, I'm already thinking about next year) are to make something using half square triangles (since I'm a little intimidated by them), a wonky star block, a "proper" log cabin block and an improv quilt. I think another mini quilt using these techniques is in order, don't you?

I've seen many on Flickr and various blogs and always thought the citrus color palette was refreshing and clean. Jennifer of Ellison Lane Quilts and Sarah of Fairy Face Designs started this Quilt Along a few months back and I decided to jump right in. It was my first quilt along and I tried to stick with the timeline but I only sew when I can find time so I fell behind. I'm ok with that though because I don't enjoy rushing when I sew. I get stress knots in my shoulders. Stress knots are not good. at. all. Sewing is supposed to be relaxing right?

I really could find more time to sew if I stayed off of Pinterest, Facebook, Flickr and stopped playing Bejeweled Blitz. Oh and I'm re-reading The Outlander Series of books by Diana Gabaldon. I am totally hooked on the series. ;-)
I couldn't wait for this fabric line to be released, but when it was I couldn't decide between buying a precut or yardage. I mean that's an important decision right? Well, I usually try to buy fabric in half yards to build my stash, but the half yard bundle of Ruby was way above my fabric budget for October so I decided to buy this jelly roll to see all the prints. After seeing them I'm definitely going to buy a few of the prints in yardage because they are so pretty. I think this lovely fabric would make a great strip quilt. Don't you?
I decided to use one of my favorite fabrics for the binding, full moon polka dot in lime by Amy Butler. If I was making this again, I would change the purple to a natural linen or Kona Ash. It just seems like a lot of purple. I still like it a lot though.

It's not a table runner, it's too big to be a mug rug, it's not meant to be a placemat....so I'm just going to call it a "tablemat". My tablemat is designed to go under my fruit bowl on my kitchen table. I thought it would bring a little fall/halloween spirit into my otherwise undecorated kitchen. We usually do a little bit of decorating for Halloween but this fall has been very busy.

Below is the fabric I'm using for the other 3 sides. The multicolored dot might be the binding. I'm not liking the purple with the back fabric. We'll see...
This is the fabric for the back. Aren't those little cats cute? I decided to use more of a fallish fabric on the reverse instead of halloweenish so I could flip it over and use it during Thanksgiving.
So because I have so much extra time on my hands I decided to do ANOTHER quilt. My sewing machine was calling out to me for attention. I was browsing my blog list and came upon this nice pattern that would make a great quilt for me. Above All Fabric was hosting a spring quilt along that provided a timeline. I had the perfect charm pack in mind for this. I made each nine patch block whenever I found small blocks of time. I made it bigger than the pattern called for b/c this quilt was for me. Making this quilt made me realize that I like making quilts slowly and not rushing through. The process of quilting calms my mind. Here it is before I added the borders:

With the borders added:

The pieced back is a combination of fabric I found at Ikea and some Bella and Kona solids.
The binding is a black and white stripe. This quilt is the perfect size for me to cuddle with. The hubs has put in an order for a quilt that's big enough for his 6 foot tall self. To that I said Yipeee! Just the excuse I needed to buy more fabric.

Front: Punctuation by American Jane, Kona solid in white for sashing
Back: Striped Ikea fabric, Bella and Kona solids
Binding: Black and White stripe-no name on selvedge
It was a 5th birthday gift for my oldest son. He and my youngest love to play "I -Spy" with it.

It's made with 5 inch charm squares that were fussy cut.
I was encouraged to start quilting by a very good friend of mine who is a young mother like me. I was always intimidated by the idea of "quilting", but making this quilt empowered me. It's not perfect by any means but I love it.

Fabric: some of the print squares were gifted to me and the others I picked up from Hobby Lobby and my local quilt shop. Solid squares are Kona Sand.

Border: Random green fabric from Hobby Lobby
Binding: can't remember name of fabric-from my local quilt shop

I'll try and do better about posting the names of the fabrics I use. When I made this back in February 2011 I wasn't keeping track of what the selvedge said....whoops!Patricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065975923601955680noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393415824466882007.post-59328830792438831102011-10-19T12:49:00.000-04:002011-10-19T12:49:14.629-04:00Finally did it!I took the plunge and started a blog.
